Title: Clinical effect of TCM in treating rheumatoid arthritis

[Abstract]

Purpose: Exploring the clinical effect of internal medicine of TCM(traditional Chinese medicine)in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis

[Method]:

A total of 70 patients were randomly selected for the study, and the time period was from January 2021 to February 2022. They were randomly divided into two groups, namely the RESEARCH GROUP (treated with TCM herbs) and the CONTROL GROUP (treated with western medicine Methotrexate). There were 35 patients in each group, and the efficacy and side effects were compared.

CONTROL GROUP: Male 16, Female 19, avg age: 53.28; Avg length of RA: 11.12 months

RESEARCH GROUP: Male 15, Female 20, Avg age: 52.67, Avg length of RA: 11.09 months.

[Results]:

Comparison of efficacy and side effects:

In this study, the curative effect of the two groups was evaluated through the follow-up clinical examination results, and the curative effect indicators included MARKEDLY EFFECTIVE, EFFECTIVE, and INEFFECTIVE. Calculate the final total effective rate.

In the RESEARCH GROUP, 21 cases were MARKEDLY EFFECTIVE, accounting for 60%, 12 cases were EFFECTIVE, accounting for 34.29%, 2 cases were INEFFECTIVE, accounting for 5.71%, and the total EFFECTIVE RATE (total 33 cases) is 94.29%.

In the CONTROL GROUP, 17 cases were MARKEDLY EFFECTIVE, accounting for 48.57%, 10 cases were EFFECTIVE, accounting for 28.57%, 8 cases were INEFFECTIVE, accounting for 22.86%, and the total EFFECTIVE RATE  (total 27 cases) is 77.14%.

The efficiency of the RESEARCH GROUP was significantly higher than that of the CONTROL GROUP, P<0.05.

Side effect:

RESEARCH GROUP: 1 case of nausea and vomiting, 1 case of hair loss, 0 cases of liver damage, 0 cases of decreased white blood cell index. So, 2 cases occurred side effect in total, the incidence rate was 5.71%

CONTROL GROUP: 3 cases of nausea and vomiting, 3 cases of hair loss, 1 case of liver injury, and 1 case of decreased white blood cell index. So, 8 cases occurred side effect in total, the incidence rate: 22.86%.

The efficiency of the RESEARCH GROUP was significantly higher than that of the CONTROL GROUP, and the side effects in the RESEARCH GROUP was significantly lower than that of the CONTROL GROUP. The comparison between the two groups showed P=0.0404, and the P value was <0.05, which was statistically significant.

[Conclusion]:

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic immune disease that is relatively difficult to treat. The long-term effect of conventional western medicine treatment is poor, and it is necessary to actively apply Chinese herbal medicines for intervention. The drug effect is better and the side effects are relatively less.

    1. It’s written in Chinese (see attached original article). Don’t know how to translate it into English with right plants. Many plants are different in Norther America and in Asia.
This is not a very effective formula to be honest. Probably ok but moderate.
In TCM practice, it’s also better to see the specific symptoms and choose the best formulation (maybe doing some change as well). TCM is a more personalized approach (that’s why we only focus on Arthritis, this is a much simpler disease compared to other diseases.) Plus, we know most of American’s lifestyle and know the situation for most of arthritis in America.
However, it’s also not 100% guaranteed (there are some specific situations that arthritis is not “cold type”), although it should work for most. That’s why we typically need to make a consultation first.
Keep in mind that TCM system is a totally different system from modern science, including the categorization of diseases.
      Hope this explanation helps.
